Lantern Vow Honey Cakes
“Sweet as promises kept, golden as the light that carries them skyward.”
The Night of Lantern Vows
The Night of Lantern Vows is one of Avaria’s most cherished holidays — a romantic and spiritual evening when citizens release lanterns carrying wishes and promises into the night sky. These small honey cakes are baked throughout the day, filling homes and streets with their warm, spiced fragrance long before the first lanterns rise.
Traditionally, you bake these cakes with someone meaningful: a partner, a family member, a close friend, a mentor. The act of baking together represents shared intention. The cakes are then eaten while watching the lanterns rise, their sweetness sealing the vows written on paper and released to the wind.
These cakes are never sold. Bakeries in Avaria close on the Night of Lantern Vows so families are encouraged to bake together. The traditional way to eat them is to break a cake in half and share it while stating a promise aloud — the person you share with becomes the keeper of that vow.
Recipe
Lantern Vow Honey Cakes
Makes
24 small cakes
Prep
20 minutes
Cook
12–15 minutes
Ingredients
- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup honey
- ¼ cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup milk
Honey Glaze:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 24-cup mini muffin tin with paper liners.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter, honey, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract.
- Alternately add flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined — do not overmix.
- Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each about ⅔ full.
- Bake 12–15 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean and the tops spring back when lightly pressed.
- Cool in pan 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the glaze: whisk together powdered sugar, honey, milk, and salt until smooth and pourable. Adjust milk as needed for desired consistency.
- Drizzle glaze over cooled cakes. Let set for 10 minutes before serving.
Variations
Orange Blossom Cakes: Add 1 teaspoon orange blossom water to the batter and ½ teaspoon to the glaze for a floral variation popular in southern Avaria.
Lavender Honey: Use lavender-infused honey in both the cakes and glaze for a more contemplative, meditative version.
Filled Vow Cakes: Before baking, press a small cube of cream cheese into the centre of each cake for a surprise filling.
Kurillian Notes
Leftover cakes — though there rarely are any — can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Some Avarians believe eating them the morning after the festival brings good fortune for the month ahead, making the rare leftover something to quietly look forward to rather than regret.
