Duelist’s Precision Salad

“Light enough to move, substantial enough to endure.”

The Meal Before the Match

Avarian duelists follow a strict dietary regimen before competitions or formal challenges. Heavy meals slow reflexes; empty stomachs cause distraction. This salad strikes the perfect balance — providing energy without weight, clarity without hunger.

The dish originated in the duelling academies, where instructors noticed students performed best when they ate this specific combination two to three hours before sparring. The recipe spread throughout Avaria and is now served at any event where physical or mental precision matters: exams, diplomatic negotiations, arcane demonstrations, and of course, formal duels.

During the Dual-Eclipse Tournament, this salad is served to all participants at midday regardless of their evening match time. Some academies won’t allow students to spar until they’ve demonstrated they can properly prepare it.

The walnut represents strategic thinking. The mint represents clarity. The cranberries represent the sweet victory that follows disciplined preparation. This is not superstition — it is the Avarian instinct to assign meaning to every deliberate act.

Duelist’s Precision Salad

Ingredients

  • 6 cups mixed greens (arugula, spinach, butter lettuce)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ½ cup cucumber, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup toasted walnuts, roughly chopped
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries or cherries
  • 4 oz fresh goat cheese, crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, torn

Precision Vinaigrette:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 small shallot, minced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry all greens. In Avarian tradition, water on the leaves is considered sloppy preparation.
  2. In a large bowl, combine greens, tomatoes, cucumber, walnuts, cranberries, and mint.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, mustard, honey, and minced shallot until emulsified.
  4. Season vinaigrette with salt and pepper. The dressing should be balanced — not too acidic, not too sweet. Avarians believe imbalanced flavours lead to imbalanced focus.
  5. Just before serving, drizzle vinaigrette over salad and toss gently to coat every leaf evenly.
  6. Divide among four plates. Top each portion with crumbled goat cheese.
  7. Serve immediately. This salad does not keep — it must be eaten fresh.

Variations

Veilblade Version: Add thin slices of rare seared beef for extra protein before dimensional magic training.

Runebinder Variation: Include pomegranate seeds for their association with memory and concentration.

Noble House Style: Top with edible flowers (pansies, nasturtiums) for formal presentations.

Kurillian Notes

Duelists eat this salad exactly two hours before combat, believing this timing allows for full digestion while maintaining energy levels. It is considered poor form to eat it closer to the match — doing so suggests poor planning, which suggests poor judgment, which suggests you may already have lost.
