How resonance shapes the setting of my mythic science fiction.

Why Harmonics?

Every fictional universe begins with an idea, a spark….or even a question.
For the Harmonic Constellation, which most definitely did not carry that name from the outset, the question was:

What if the universe communed with a language of its own?

This language, not one of spoken nor written words, instead was conceptualized as being a language of resonance. The patterns, frequencies, and the emotional intent, the truths of the universe, traversing the cosmos in a way that resonated with every being.

It was from this question that I first conceptualized harmonic physics.

I decided then that this concept and fictional field of science would become the backbone of a science fiction setting that I had long jotted notes and blurbs on when playing D&D with friends and having deep conversations about what lies beyond the known.

This field of science was designed to blend our understanding of theoretical physics with intention, energy with emotion, and cosmic feats of engineering on the grandest of scales with the subtle mathematics behind vibration.

This post, hopefully, can provide some insights what harmonic physics is, the science (or pseudoscience) that I worked to develop, and why it is so important to the Harmonic Constellation.

Harmonics as a Foundation of the Universe

Harmonic physics exists due to a very simple set of principles:
Everything resonates.
Everything has a frequency.
Everything leaves a pattern.

It does not matter what you are discussing. They all exist within that set of principles. Matter, energy, emotion, memory, and even space itself.

Within the structure of this universe, the earliest of interstellar races had developed the ability to manipulate and shape these resonances with a precision that appeared almost divine. These beings were capable of building structures and technologies that went beyond simply harnessing the energies of the universe —- rather they would sing to reality itself.

Despite this, harmonic physics doesn’t stem from mysticism and myth, but is rooted in hard science. As with any science, it is governed by rules, limits, and logic (despite pushing the envelope).

Some of the fundamental pillars built to support this fictional science are:

Resonant Interference
This is the concept that frequencies are capable of strengthening, reshaping, or completely cancelling each other out.

Intentional Harmonics
The intentionality behind action is critically important. Consciousness, emotion, and various mental states are all capable of producing measurable resonance fields.

Lattice Harmonics
The universe is connecting by a natural “grid”, similar to the grids you might see on a map, made up of resonant pathways. Some of these pathways are stable, while others are broken or warped.

Amplification Structure
This is less a principle of harmonic physics than it is a force or guiding hand that can direct and enhance the natural resonance of the universe. The ancient structures produced by the earliest of interstellar species were capable of magnifying the harmonic inputs to such a degree that they could warp reality and shape space itself on a massive scale.

These are the basic principles of harmonic physics that give explanation and form to the resonance gates used for interstellar travel and even the most modern of scientific anomalies.

The Significance of Emotion

Emotion and its numerous expressions, their measurable responses, and the physical effects they have on each of us was a crucial component to the creation of harmonic physics. From this, one of the most important aspects of the field was created:

Emotion is a physically measurable thing.

This isn’t intended to be understood through metaphor or mysticism, but through a very literal sense.

Emotional states produce states have the potential to produce resonance signatures. This can be seen in a number of different ways:

– Feelings of calm bring forth coherence.
– Anger and its derivatives erupt into catalytic volatility.
– Grief produces long-wave distortions that have the ability to warp perception and tethers to reality.
– Hope produces harmonic lift and is recognized as a frequency of healing.
– Fear is capable of producing unstable frequencies and disrupts natural processes.

This is not a concept of magic, but is the interaction between biological physics and cosmic structures.

Certain species, the most ancient of beings, are capable of attuning to this science and these structure. The younger races are just beginning to glimpse behind the curtain.

That knowledge, the fact that scientific logic is being applied to the foundations of harmonic physics, allows for the universe of the Harmonic Constellation to blend elements of the mythic and harder science fiction.

Harmonic Structures and Technologies

The harmonic physics that were developed and mastered by the ancient races allowed for the creation of some truly magnificent and awe-inspiring technological achievements. From this field of science were created:

Gate Networks – Structures designed with the capability to attune to specific frequencies and enable movement across vast distances in ways no FTL tech could dream of matching.

Resonant Engines – These wonders were able to control harmonic pulses and direct them to manipulate spacetime itself.

Light Constructs – As an exemplar of the physical nature of emotional frequency, light constructs were tools and machines that were made of photonic particles given tangible form.

Choir-Based Architectural Feats – Due to the physical nature of the resonance that were harnessed by the ancient races, they were able to weave harmonic fields into the membrane’s of their ships, cities, and numerous megastructures they produced.

Emotional-Lattice Interfaces – Similar in concept to neural-links and neural-networks, these interfaces allowed for various systems to respond directly to emotional alignment and intent.

These were but a few of the technological wonders that shaped the greatest interstellar civilizations to have ever traversed the cosmos. Once they began to decay, that loss would reshape the destinies of the galaxy, and the younger races, for millennia to come.

The Connection Between Story and Harmonics

The purpose of harmonics in this, and all, universes, be they the physical one or those we create in our mind, is not just be an afterthought.

They have the ability to shape cultures, politics, mysteries, characters, and tone. Harmonics, the concept of harmony and balance itself, is an undercurrent that runs through all of my writing.

There is a field of anthropology called ethnomusicology. This subdiscipline frames music as a cultural phenomenon. Those anthropologists who study this phenomenon examine the role of music in society, the ties music has to human behavior, and how music, in some form, has existed in all human culture across time. This is something that has stuck with me deeply since my early twenties. I had a cultural anthropology professor who had a deep passion for music and was a tremendous percussionist. He and one of our philosophy professors were in a band together and believed that music can be found in all existence. It did not matter if it was coming from humans, the running of rivers across stones and down waterfalls, or the melodic percussion of rain on hard earth, Professor Lamy and Professor Lalor both felt that music is integral to existence.

Humanity’s story—mine, yours, and that of everyone who came before or will follow after—has always been shaped by harmonics, the natural frequencies woven into the structure of the universe.

In my writing, harmonics aren’t just science —
they’re the heartbeat of a universe waiting to be understood.
